IÉSEG today launches IÉSEG Insights, a new website that has been developed to share and disseminate the results of the research and expertise of the School’s facultyIÉSEG Insights aims to help provide keys to understanding an increasingly complex, volatile and uncertain world and to be a platform for inspiration and reflection for the business world, students and the academic world.

IÉSEG Insights, at the heart of the School’s new strategic plan

IÉSEG, like any higher education institution, has a responsibility in terms of knowledge creation, research and innovation. Inspiring young people by disseminating cutting-edge research in the classroom, and inspiring companies and organizations by co-creating solutions with them to meet their main challenges is essential and a fundamental part of the School’s mission.

This responsibility is also the foundation of the School’s new strategic plan “Inspire – Connect – Transform”IÉSEG wants to establish itself as a hub of collective intelligence supporting entrepreneurship and innovation in order to respond to the environmental, social, societal and economic challenges that the world is currently facing and will face in the years to come.

For Caroline ROUSSEL, the School’s Dean, “IÉSEG Insights is fully in line with our strategic plan, focused on the quality of training and research, at the service of young people, companies and society. The website makes available to all stakeholders, and in particular to decision-makers in the economic and political spheres, the knowledge produced by the cutting-edge research of our experts and professors, in fields as varied as CSR and sustainability, artificial intelligence and Big Data, ethics, finance, marketing, strategy, management, entrepreneurship… This new ‘Resource Center’ will offer quality content in French and in English, also from an interdisciplinary logic, to feed public debate and contribute to transforming our society.

Articles, videos, podcasts and biographies: a rich variety of content

InsightsIÉSEG Insights already gathers around 200 articles and nearly 50 videos and podcasts in English and/or French. Experts and professors from the School share their analyses and work, respond to social issues, and project themselves into the world of tomorrow.

To enable users to search and find information easily, content is organized into a series of categories (public policy, CSR, management, Big Data, finance etc.) but also by keywords, via a system of tags.

Articles, videos, podcasts are also enriched with the biography of the contributor(s), as IÉSEG Insights will also serve as a directory of the School’s experts, who are available to explain and share their research with the media, with public and private organizations, or during public debates.

Do not hesitate to subscribe to the future IÉSEG Insights newsletter to receive the latest content and updates.

Designing a package of controls to sustain a hybrid mission: Interview with Professor Lies Bouten

As hybrid organizations seek to balance their financial and non-financial objectives – this can create tensions, challenges and contradictions at different levels of the organization. Professor Lies Bouten, ICOR member and professor of accounting at IÉSEG, and her co-author Sophie Hoozée (Ghent University), recently studied how a luxury hotel chain implemented a package of management control practices to help it pursue its dual mission: developing business and financial stability whilst contributing to environmental protection.

Find out more about her work in this interview she recently gave to the School’s website. She outlines the background and results of this study and gives some recommendations for organizations with a hybrid mission who are creating or reviewing their control practices.

Video: A new model of corporate mindfulness

Julie Bayle-Cordier is a professor of strategy and sustainability and a member of ICOR. She was recently interviewed, as part of the School’s 60-seconds Inside Research videos, about her latest research on corporate mindfulness, coauthored with Paul Rouvelin, Azadeh Savoli and João Vieira da Cunha*.

The researchers carried out a systematic literature review of research on corporate mindfulness in management journals published between 1999 and January 2020.

From this work they propose a model that links different streams of the literature on corporate mindfulness: the individual, group level, organizational and societal level approaches to mindfulness. In connecting these approaches, they show that the individual level benefits of mindfulness such as improved employee wellbeing, emotional regulation or decision making can in fact enhance group processes such as group social dynamics and leadership processes.

IÉSEG to propose a new Master in Management for Sustainability from September 2022

Through its 2025 Vision, IÉSEG has given an essential place to Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) and Sustainable Development (SD) in its strategy, its activities, its research and its programs. After having rethought the way CSR and SD are taught in all the programs, to provide a more transversal teaching approach emphasizing the business models and the transformation of organizations to implement them, IÉSEG now moves a step further to launch for the next academic year (September 2022) a new program specifically dedicated to CSR and SD: the Master in Management for Sustainability.

This Master’s program, that will be directed by ICOR Coordinator Frank de Bakker,  is designed for purpose-driven students who are concerned about sustainable development issues and who wish to become managers capable of implementing solutions that meet the challenges of tomorrow in the professional world.

Managing the full range of sustainability risks and challenges is top-of-mind for business leaders. This means making day-to-day decisions that, for example, ensure water quality, tackle climate change, advance green technology, engage with stakeholders, innovate for food and validate social compliance for fair labor practices.

Find out more about  this program via this article and the IESEG website.

ICOR member recognized with prestigious award

Each year during the Annual Meeting, the prestigious Academy of Management recognizes authors and reviewers of journal articles that were published in each of the Academy’s journals. These include prizes for the best article, reviewer (s) over the last year as well as a « decade award » that rewards the article that has been most cited over the last 10 years.

Congratulations to ICOR team member, Professor Farah Kodeih, whose 2011 co-authored article* on institutional complexity and organizational responses was recognised with the « Decade award » in the  Academy of Management Annals!. Farah subsequently joined IESEG in 2019, and this research was published when she was carrying out her Ph.D at ESSEC Business School .

She explains: “This research holds a special place in my career, as it resulted from an international collaboration with some of the leading scholars in Organization Theory when I visited the University of Alberta, and it was the first manuscript I got published. The impact of this study caught us all by surprise, and it showed how much interest there is in organizations that straddle different cultural spheres and navigate contradictory pressures. The current focus of my research on social organizations and their diverse efforts to support marginalized communities can be seen as a continuation of this early work.”

The Academy of Management (AOM) is a leading professional association for management and organization scholars. « Members are professors and Ph.D. students in business schools at universities, academics in related social science and other fields, and practitioners who value knowledge creation and application », it notes. Founded in 1936, its international community today ‘is nearly 20,000 strong and spans over 120 countries’.
